In an interview with Axios on HBO, Donald Trump stated he is looking to sign an executive order that would seek to end birthright citizenship.
Birthright citizenship is a right protected by the 14th amendment.
This dangerous political stunt comes only a week before this years Midterm Elections, similar timing to when he first talked about this unbelievable act weeks before the presidential election of 2016.
Apart from being a political stunt, it is a major attack on our latino and immigrant communities. Trump continues to use the refugee caravan making its way to our southern border to build up his anti-immigrant rhetoric and republican support for the November elections.
Even some conservatives, like commentator Bill Kristol are showing disdain for the president’s plan to end birthright citizenship.
“The shrinking caravan of refugees isn’t a threat to the country or the constitutional order,” Kristol wrote on Twitter. “A president who tries to end birthright citizenship by executive order is.”
The fear of the political power latino citizens have in affecting elections results has Trump and his administration running scared resorting to ignorant racist rhetoric to build hate against our communities and attempt to keep as many latinos out of elected positions as possible.
Our president’s racist ignorance on the matter was clearly stated in his comment saying that the United States of America is the only country that offers birthright citizenship. What an idiot. He need look no further than our northern and southern neighbors to disprove that incorrect talking point.
It is also worrying to see a sitting president try and overthrow a constitutional amendment that has been in place since the civil war and whose intention was, and continues to, give equal rights to all those born in this country.
No president should have the power to end rights protected by the constitution simply to follow their presidential agenda. These rights are constitutional for a reason. As we gear up to vote these elections, we need to keep in mind all that this administration has done against our latino and immigrant communities.
That is where our power to fight back lies.
